When people aren’t asking questions
They’re making suggestions
And when they’re not doing one of those
They’re either looking over your shoulder or stepping
on your toes
And as if that weren’t enough to annoy you
They employ you.
Anybody at leisure
Incurs everybody’s displeasure.
It seems to be very irking
To people at work to see other people not working.
So they tell you that work is wonderful medicine,
Just look at Firestone and Ford and Edison,
And they lecture you till they’re out of breath
or something
And then if you don’t succumb they starve you to death
or something.
All of which results in a nasty quirk:
That if you don’t want to work you have to work to earn
enough money so that you won’t have to work.
Ogdan Nash
I am a very big Ogden Nash fan. We used to read the poetry with my mom and my brother and sometimes my brother and I would read Ogden Nash to my grandmother’s ’48 Chevy when it wouldn’t start! He was so clever with words and rhymes of words that weren’t supposed to rhyme and anyone out there who is not familiar should definitely check him out ! I always remember a poem where he juxtaposed ‘peony’ and ‘pianist’ for some funny alliterative moments and of course there is his funny take on the somewhat pompous poem TREES ( Joyce Kilmer) which I think goes like this
“I think that I shall never see
a billboard lovely as a tree
and indeed unless the billboards fall
I’ll never see a tree at all”
I did not check that — but it’s pretty close!!
and of course even more pithy
“Candy is dandy
but Liquor is quicker!”
